Lapop, Washington DC

As the days get shorter and nights get colder, why not insert some color into DC’s winter?

Yudy Marquez solo exhibition was at the showroom of LaPop in Adams Morgan. The exhibition was a nice fit to this multicultural cafe space. Yudy is an architect and painter from Venezuela. Her magic realism style is a novel curiosity to the DC public which led to a good turn out.

In Yudy’s proposal, women have an important place as a protective and maternal bond of home and land. In intimate scenes she stops in everyday situations and acts ceremonially of the different stages of life, such as family portraits, christening, communion, marriage, birth. Of the Merida landscape it shows the geography, customs, and urban environment. In completely allegorical compositions, the characters and nature have a leading role, showing “absorbed in worlds parallels between the possible and the impossible, the real and the unreal”.

The importance of community and family is what makes Yudy’s work relatable to all. The artist is part of the Venezuelan diaspora and moves between places every few months. Despite all this, she keeps her spirit high and continuously paints. We look forward to presenting more of her work in the area.
