Jaime Procopio Bernal Macouzet, (Mexico, 1942), is a self-taught painter who for three decades has dedicated himself to painting and writing with passion and discipline, alongside his professional activities. He had his first individual exhibition in Guanajuato, Mexico in 1999, with a group of watercolor artworks, in which his “skill… in the use of color and composition” was already appreciated. This quality of their language has been present ever since. In 2019 he adopts the name of Procopio as his artistic identity and as a symbol of his commitment to creative work.
Throughout his long career, two large nuclei can be distinguished: painting and illustration. In both productions, color has a prominent presence due to the intensity of the chromatic fields in still lifes, landscapes, expressionist figurations, and compositions of disjointed forms.
He has experimented with different expressive modes, themes, techniques, and materials motivated by an incessant curiosity, in search of new visual results. His work in acrylic is presented for the first time in Morelia, Mexico. This exhibition brings together the pictorial production carried out between 2004 and 2016. Precisely, from the works made with this acrylic technique, we present in Arte Original a selection of artworks that have in common motley, rhythmic, colorful compositions loaded with symbolic elements. In this proposal by Procopio, spontaneous, irregular, delineated and mysterious figures are observed. They appear discreetly culled from the composition, but with a diaphanous presence. They reflect the artist’s intention to capture his own ‘creative’ vision of reality, with a certain complexity in its forms but at the same time with a discreet poetry.
