Natalia Rondón
Natalia Rondón (Venezuela) is a multidisciplinary artist who has developed a work around the landscape, conceived as a cartography of aerial views. Her passion for traveling has led her to tour cities, of which she has accumulated images and memories. In the Cartografía portátil (Portable cartography) series, which began in 2005, she begins to relate these visual records with the memory of the ‘tour’ she took through those places, both in Venezuela and abroad: Barquisimeto, New York, Caracas, Montevideo, Havana, Barcelona, Maracaibo, Buenos Aires, Cairo, Istanbul, among others. And what better way to connect with each place than with the complete zenithal view of the map.
The support of her work is the printed map that intervenes with pictorial and extra-pictorial materials. The textures show the inaccuracy of the register and the earthy tones that predominate in the color palette, guide the chromatic associations that were settled in the memory with the territory covered. Despite the fact that her work starts from the map, the function of this document to guide in the location coordinates is completely altered, because for Natalia Rondón, her maps are of ‘dislocation’. The geographical territory is decontextualized until reaching an illusory image of the topography. However, it maintains the map’s portable design so it can be folded for easy portability. This is why the folds in the support prevail.
The Cartografía portátil (Portable cartography) series has nothing to do with migration or the diaspora, only with the notion of displacement. With this work she has been awarded and participated in exhibitions inside and outside the country.
