Jorge Martínez
Jorge Martínez (Barranquilla, Colombia, 1952), has extensive theoretical and practical education in the area of visual arts. In 1978 he got a degree in Fine Arts from Universidad del Atlántico, Barranquilla. In 1983 he completed his studies in Graphic Arts at the Centro de Estudios Gráficos (CEGRA), in Caracas, Venezuela; and in 2005 he completed the Master’s Degree in History, Theory of Art, and Architecture, at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogotá.
The artist theorizes very well about the phenomenon of art, reflections, and his work. He explains below from a third person’s view point, like telling a story as a revisionist historian:
“After unlearning what he learned, turning towards new expressions with a certain revisionist imprint, he has charged his large-format works with great vitality and strength where color, line and gesture are the actors of the new visual discourse.”
“After investigating the line as an element of expression in drawing and engraving, making it corporeal and real, he goes beyond the conception of flatness in painting. This is done by changes in shape through the stain, the color, the gesture, and engraved writing. The line is revitalized and acquires new meanings, transparencies, and dense atmospheres through the superimposed lines on the painted canvas.”
“In the work of the artist Jorge Martínez, the result is evident, a product of the pictorial praxis that invades the artist at the time of its realization in a spontaneous, visceral, fortuitous but structured way at the same time – painted and re-painted, drawn and redrawn.”
“Painting, drawing and engraving manifests the visual-linguistic resource that the artist has in an integral way in the search for new pictorial orders, different realities, explorations of unknown aspects in matter and color in new contexts.”
